English railway engineer and bridge designer, for biography of whom see Oxford DNB and the obituary in Min. Proc. ICE 81 (1884-5), 321-2. From the 1850s until the 1870s, Peter William Barlow was engineer-in-chief to the Londonderry and Enniskillen and Londonderry and Coleraine railways and in the mid-1860s he was also consultant engineer to the Finn Valley Railway.(1) In 1857 he produced designs for the new bridge at Derry after the winner of the competition for designing the bridge, George Rogers Long, took up a post in Bengal.(2) He described his design, a combination of girders and supension chains, at a meeting of the Institution of Civil Engineers on 19 May 1857, when it was criticized by Edwin Clark, who had been resident engineer for the construction of the great Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straits.(3) Barlow later defended his design against Clark's criticisms at the Dublin meeting of Mechanical Science section of the British Association in August 1857.(4) His bridge was not carried out. Instead a new design by JOHN HAWKSHAW  JOHN HAWKSHAW was adopted and executed in 1860-63.
