Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Co. Kerry. Singleton Goodwin, son of the Rev. William Goodwin, was born at Maryborough (Portlaoise), Co. Laois, in 1852.  After attending Kilkenny College, he studied engineering Trinity College, Dublin, graduating with the BAI degree in 1875.  After serving a one-year pupilage under Sir Joseph Bazalgette in England in 1877, he set up his own practice in London in 1877.   In February 1879 he joined the engineering staff of the Great Southern and Western Railway of Ireland as an assistant engineer. Other railway work in Ireland followed including two years - from December 1884 until December 1886 -  as resident engineer on the Clonakilty Extension Railway under JOHN WILLIAM DORMAN. JOHN WILLIAM DORMAN. (1)   In September 1887 he was appointed county surveyor of the southern division of Co. Kerry, in October 1889 he was transferred to the northern division and in July 1891 he was given charge of the whole county.(2)    He retired in May 1920(3) and appears to have moved to Exeter, Devon.(4) 

Goodwin was married to Everina Katherine, daughter of the Rev. Alexander Delap of Valentia, Co. Kerry, on 30 July 1890(5) and had four children.
