Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer and architect, of Dundalk, Co. Louth, and Newry, Co. Down. William Barber was born in Forkhill, Co. Armagh, in 1877 or 1878 and educated at Dundalk Institution. After leaving school he entered the office of R.P.T. LOGAN  LOGAN in Dundalk. On the latter's death in 1903 he succeeded to the practice, which he carried on successfully until his own death. He also practised at Drogheda and Newry, opening an office in the latter town in 1905.(1) He was elected to the position of permanent engineer to Newry No. 2 Rural District Council in 1911(2) and was also engineer to the Glyde Drainage Board. He died at the age of sixty-three on 5 May 1941.According to his obituarist in the JRIAI, he had been a well-known athlete in his youth 'and in his later years was a prominent and popular supporter of horse racing' whose 'advice upon improvements to Race Courses, including the new Popular Stand at the Curragh, which he planned, was frequently sought.'  At the time of the 1911 census, he had been married  to his wife, Kathleen, for three years but had no children.
