Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin, Galway, and Derby   Dermot Gogarty, second son of Oliver St John Gogarty, was born on 5 September 1908 and educated at Downside and Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied architecture before spending time in the office of EDWIN LUTYENS EDWIN LUTYENS . On his return to Dublin, he worked in the office of VINCENT KELLY VINCENT KELLY (1) before setting up ihis own practice in Merrion Square in 1936.(2) Much of his time was spent occupied coaching rowing at Dublin University. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was called up to serve with the RAF. He had learned to fly while studying at Cambridge and he was now sent to the Middle East where he served as a pilot with the Transport Command. Following the war, he moved to Galway in 1948.(3), and for a time to Canada, and then eventually to England.

In 1935 Gogarty married Mary Carmel, daughter of John Joseph Esmonde of Drominagh, Co. Tipperary, from whom he was later divorced; they had one son.  He died in hopsital in Derby, England, 20 January, 1985.
