Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stained-glass and painted tile manufacturers, of London.   Alexander Gibbs (1831ca-1886) was the second or third son of Isaac Alexander Gibbs (1802-1851), an artist who established a stained glass workshop in London circa 1848.(1)   After his father's death in 1851, Alexander Gibbs and his elder brother CHARLES ALEXANDER GIBBS  CHARLES ALEXANDER GIBBS carried on the family business, initially as Isaac Gibbs and from 1854 or 1855 as Charles and Alexander Gibbs.  A year or two later Alexander Gibbs broke away to set up his own independent business in Bloomsbury, trading as Alexander Gibbs & Co., while Charles remained in the original premises in Marylebone Road.  The company survived until the first or second decade of the twentieth century.
