Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Waterford. Charles Richard Galwey was born in 1840, the fourth son of the Rev. Charles Galwey, Rector of Moville, Co. Donegal, and his wife Honoria, second daughter of Colonel Andrew Knox of Prehen, Co. Derry. After serving an apprenticeship to his elder brother WILLIAM GALWEY WILLIAM GALWEY , he worked on the Dungannon & Omagh and Kilkenny Junction Railways and was also employed on drainage projects.(1) In about 1868 he was appointed principal engineer on the Waterford & Central Ireland Railway. He held this post until at least 1887.(2) In 1879 he colloborated with JAMES OTWAY  JAMES OTWAY of Waterford in preparing proposals for a bridge to replace Lemuel Cox's wooden bridge over the River Suir at Waterford.(3)

Galwey died on 15 January 1894. In 1870 he had married Janet, third daugher of Horatio Uniacke Townshend of Rathmoyle, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, by whom he had a son and two daughters.
