Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and carpenter, of Belfast, active in the 1760s and 1770s. During the 1860s Edward Foot was consulted by Matthew Forde about the possible rebuilding or enlargement of the old house at Seaforde, Co. Down.(1)  He submitted plans for the Belfast Poorhouse which were not adopted.(2) In July 1771 he was appointed superintendent of works for the erection of the Poorhouse(3) but was dismissed soon afterwards(3) because, among other misdemeanours, his 'haughty, Peevish Temper was very disagreeable to the Workmen Concerned & to the Committee which Created Confusion and prevented the Business from going forward in a smooth orderly manner'.(4) In February 1772 he advertised mahogany in the Belfast News Letter,(5) which also records his making proposals for carpentry work at the Poorhouse in April of the same year.(6) Later he worked under - COOPER  COOPER on the Belfast Market House and Assembly Rooms.(7) He died in November 1775,(8) and his effects, including furniture, carpenters tools and cases of drawing instruments, were sold at auction on 6 December following.(9)
