Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Co. Mayo. Thomas P. Flanagan was born in Brickens, Co. Mayo, and entered St Jarlath's College, Tuam, in 1908. He studied engineering at University College, Galway, obtaining the BE degree with distinction in 1917. While at university he became involved in the nationalist movement and after leaving joined the IRA. After the truce of July 1921 he was appointed engineer officer to the West Mayo Brigade of the IRA, simultaneously, if intermittently, working as an assistant county surveyor for South Mayo. He was appointed to the post of county surveyor for the whole of Co. Mayo in October 1924(1) in succession to EDMUND KEVILLE DIXON EDMUND KEVILLE DIXON . Only twenty-nine at the time of his appointment, he remained in post until his retirement in 1960.(2) During the Emergency he organized the production of large quantities turf from undeveloped bogland for the national fuel pool.

Flanagan was married and had a son, Michael, and other children. An energetic and dynamic man, his leisure interests included athletics and fishing. He presented the Flanagan Cup for gaelic games competitions among Co. Mayo schools.
