FERGUSON, JOHN [1]
- Born: - Died: -
Carpenter and architect. John Ferguson worked at Mount Stewart, Co. Down, from 1782, first as carpenter for JAMES STEWART' s Temple of the Winds, and later, from circa 1803 to 1805, as supervising architect for the erection of GEORGE DANCE' s designs for the enlargement of the house itself. The Earl of Londonderry had originally proposed that Ferguson himself should be entirely responsible for the enlargement of the house, but was persuaded by his son, Lord Castlereagh, to seek Dance's advice. Dance had visited Mount Stewart in 1795 but is not known to have returned there until 1815. It seems that he sent drawings from London, which were carried out by Ferguson.
