Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. According to his 1911 census return, James Ferguson was born in Belfast in 1867 or 1868.   He was described as 'an architect with a large experience of church work' in 1903,(1)  although he declared himself to be of no religious denomination in his census return.   He is presumably the 'James Ferguson, C.E.' who was elected fellow of the Surveyors' Institute in 1912, when he was described as being 'a member of the Ulster Society of Architects and at the centre of the art movement in Belfast as Honorary secretary of the Joint Art Committee and Honorary Secretary of the Ulster Arts Club'.(2) Ferguson was a captain in the general reserve of officers(3) and during the First World War served with the Royal Engineers, attaining the rank of major.(4) He contributed an article on the development of Belfast to the Irish Builder Jubilee Issue in 1909.(5)  At the time of the 1911 census he was unmarried and living with his stepmother and sisters.

RSUA: member by 1914;(6) vice-president, 1927.(7); council member, 1928.(8)
