ELLIOTT, ROBERT MATTHEW JOHNSON

Artist and art critic, of Dublin, for biography of whom see the entry by Ruth Devine in DIB. A self-educated Englishman who had settled in Ireland by the time of the Irish census of March1901,(1) Robert Elliott was the author of Art in Ireland (1906), a collection of articles by himself which had appeared in the Irish Rosary, the Freeman's Journal and The Leader between 1902 and 1904.(2) He also contributed articles and letters on Irish architecture and ecclesiastical sculpture to the Irish Builder, where his opinions were challenged in letters from the sculptors EDMUND SHARP and HARRY HEMS . In his writings he did much to promote the architecture of WILLIAM ALPHONSUS SCOTT . With Scott in 1906 he made 'an extended architectural tour' to study Byzantine architecture in Ravenna and Turkey.(3) Between 1900 and 1909 he exhibited paintings and etchings at the Royal Hibernian Academy. He died of inflammation of the brain at the age of forty-seven on 24 March 1910 and was buried at Glasnevin Cemetery.(4) He was survived by his wife, Brigid, and son, MacCarthy.(5)
