Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stonecutter and builder, of 1 Upper Camden Street, Dublin. John Dwyer, who was active in Dublin by 1802, appears in Wilson's Dublin Directory from 1814 or earlier until 1837. In the Post Office Annual Directory for 1839, John Dwyer and Son are listed at the same address, described as 'stone cutters and marble manufacturers'; in the 1844 edition of the same directory they are described as 'general builders, stone cutters, &c.' They are still listed in Pettigrew & Oulton's Dublin Almanac of 1847. John Dwyer sent designs for doorcases to Col. Barry of Newtown Barry, Co. Wexford, in 1802(1) and carried out building works for Walter McGeough of The Argory, Co. Armagh, including 'a Portland Stone Geometrical bracketted Stair Case' in the 1820s.(2)

'John Dwyer, Esq. Camden-st' was a subscriber to William Stitt's The Practical Architect's Ready Assistant; or Builder's Complete Companion (Dublin, 1819).

The Irish Architectural Archive holds the two elevations of doorcases which John Dwyer sent to Col. Barry of Bunclody, Co. Wexford, in 1802 (Acc. 2004/114).
