Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and builder, of Lismore, Co. Waterford,(1) active circa 1815 until circa 1837. James Dwyer is listed as a builder in Lismore in Pigot & Co.'s City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory (1824), 294. His design for a gate at Lismore Castle, dated 1815, is in the National Library of Ireland.(1) There are a number of drawings by him in the Lismore Castle archives, dated between 1815 and 1837; these include survey drawings of Lismore Castle and Lismore Cathedral, and various plans and estimates for houses and farmhouses on the Duke of Devonshire's estates.(2)

(1) According to his descendant Frederick O'Dwyer, Office of Public Works, oral tradition in his family has it that Dwyer came from Kilmoyler, Co. Tipperary, and that he was buried there.
