County surveyor for Cos. Galway (western division) and Wicklow. Carter Draper, a younger son of Carter E. Draper, chemist, of Hereford, was born in Hereford on 28 Febrary 1845 but was brought up in Dublin, where his parents came to live two years after his birth. He entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1863, graduating in 1867, with the special certificates of the Engineering School in engineering, practical mechanics and physics. He served his pupilage with the Dublin engineering firm, COURTNEY STEPHENS & COURTNEY STEPHENS & amp; BAILEY BAILEY , and subsequently worked on engineering projects for Bewley, Webb & Co. and Ross, Stephens & Walpole. He then spent three years as assistant engineer on the North Wall extension of the Great Southern and Western Railway. In May 1878, after gaining first place in the county surveyorship examination, Draper was appointed county surveyor to the western division of Co. Galway and four years later, in July 1882, following the death of HENRY BRETT HENRY BRETT , was transferred to the surveyorship of Co. Wicklow, a post which he held until his death. He also practised privately.
Draper died on 7 December 1902, having been 'ailing' for some time previously. By his English-born wife, Sophy (d. 1927), he had at least ten children; two of his sons, CHARLES FREDERICK DRAPER CHARLES FREDERICK DRAPER and FRANCIS EDWIN DRAPER FRANCIS EDWIN DRAPER were also engineers.
The Irish Architectural Archive has a survey plan by Draper of the Tailors' Hall, Back Lane, made in 1875 for James Kennan of the Mission to the Liberties (Acc. 2013/81).l

Carter Draper the elder appears in the English census of 1841 as a chemist in Hereford, with a wife, Eleanor, and two son and a daughter all under the age of four. 'Carter E. Draper' appears in the Post Office Dublin Directory for 1853 as a 'druggist, 23 Mary st and 17 Richmond avenue, Fairview'; he may be the Carter Eben Draper, who was christened at St Andrew's, Holborn, London, on 17 Jan 1811 (www.familysearch.org).
