Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer, of Cabra, Co. Dublin. Arthur Joseph Downing was born in Co. Dublin on 17 August 1860 and graduated BAI from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1883.(1) In 1884 he served briefly as a  draughtsman in the Office of Public Works under ROBERT MANNING ROBERT MANNING , then carried out surveys in Ireland for BRASSINGTON & BRASSINGTON & amp; GALE and in England for J.C. Hurle.   .This was followed by four years in Australia, first in Victoria and then in New South Wales.   In 1890 he returned to Europe and became a pupil in the Great Western Railway works at Swindon.   In 1897 he became an assistant county surveyor for Co. Dublin inder WILLIAM COLLEN  WILLIAM COLLEN and, after passing the county surveyorship examination the following year, deputized as county surveyor during Collen's absences.   the 1911 census records him as a fifty-year-old bachelor living on his own in Cabra. 

Inst.CE: elected associate member, 5 March 1889.(2)
ICEI: elected member, 1 April 1908;(3) still on list of members of June 1926 but not in that of June 1927.
