Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Robert Dowling, who was possibly born in  England, received the B.Arch. degree from Liverpool University School of Architecture.  He was practising as an architect in Dublin by1938, when he designed alterations to the Pavilion Cinema, Dun Laoghaire,(1) though he appears to have opened an office only after the Second World War. He became a member of the RIAI in 1946. All his commissions to be recorded in the Irish Builder date from the late forties and fifties. He had emigrated to Canberra, Australia, by the spring of 1959 and registered as an architect in New South Wales in 1961.  His Dublin practice was taken over by THOMAS PAUL KENNEDY.& THOMAS PAUL KENNEDY.& #160; He died in Australia in 1973.   He had married in Dublin in 1943.

A sketch perspective view of an ambitious design for a Roman Catholic cathedral in Merrion Square, Dublin, signed R.H. Dowling delt. 1934 - possibly a student project - is in the Diocesan Archives, Clonliffe.
