Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Physician and amateur architect, of Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. Henry Fulton, fourth son of Joseph Fulton of Lisburn, Co. Antrim, was born in 1793. After a brief period in the Bengal Medical Service, 1828-9, he retired to Clonmore, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. He died in 1859. He was married twice, first in 1816 to Jane, daughter of Dr Finlay of Belfast, who died in 1818, by whom he had a son who died the following year, and second, on 2 September 1830, to Anne, daughter of John Miller, a Dublin lawyer,(1) by whom he had a son and five daughters. His extensive travels in Europe and Asia are recorded in his two-volume Travelling sketches in various countries, published by Longman's in 1840.

In 1833-1834 Fulton entered the competition for designing a museum, lecture rooms and campanile for Trinity College, Dublin, which was won by a GEORGE RICHARD PAIN. H GEORGE RICHARD PAIN. H e outlined his scheme in a pamphlet, Irish collegiate architecture with observations on architecture in general, dedicated without permission to the Provost and Senior Fellows of Trinity College, Dublin (2nd edition, Dublin, 1837).(2) He published articles which voiced his opinions on the subject of architecture and particular buildings in the Civil Engineer and Architect's Journal during the 1840s, the first based on a lecture he had given at the Royal Dublin Society in January 1842.(3) In 1852 he exhibited a model of a gate house or cottage, 'illustrating a plan of ventilation', at the National Exhibition of the Arts, Manufactures & Products at Cork.(4) He exhibited this model again at the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition of 1853, together with models of 'a temple, in a proposed new order of architecture' and 'a railway bridge for crossing a river subject to occasional floods'.(5)
