Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and architectural writer. Page Dickinson, who was born in 1881,(1) was the fifth son of the Rev. Hercules Henry Dickinson (1827-1905), Dean of the Chapel Royal, Dublin, and vicar of St Ann's Church, by his wife Mary Mabel, daughter of Dr Evory Kennedy.(2) He was a nephew of JAMES AUSTEN DICKINSON JAMES AUSTEN DICKINSON . He was sent to Haileybury School, but left at the age of fifteen after injuring his leg in a fall from his eldest brother's hunter. After a 'year or so' abroad, he was apprenticed for four years from around 1900 to RICHARD CAULFIELD ORPEN RICHARD CAULFIELD ORPEN , with whom he later entered into partnership. In 1915 he enlisted as a member of Dublin University Officer Training Corps and became a captain in the Mechanical Transport division; early in his service he suffered shell shock.(3) After the war, he found himself among 'those who…had to leave their native country owing to the acts of their fellow-countrymen'; by January 1920 he was working in Yorkshire, where he was 'officially connected with housing'(4) and by 1923 had moved to Harrogate.(5) He still cherished the fancy of 'a little house at Sandymount, with sea-pinks on its walls, and the slow, low waves crooning over the bar at dusk before my modest entrance', but does not appear to have returned permanently to Ireland until the end of his life.  He died at his daughter's house in Kilmacanogue, Co. Wicklow, on 1 October 1958(6) and is buried in the churchyard of Greystones Church of Ireland Church.

In Ireland Dickinson is remembered primarily as an author and journalist. One of the original members and joint honorary secretary of the Georgian Society, founded in the winter of 1907-8, he is probably best known as the co-author, with Thomas Sadleir, of Georgian Mansions in Ireland (1915), which followed the publication of the Society's Record of Eighteenth-Century Domestic Architecture and Decoration in Dublin (1909-13).(7) In 1926 his book, An outline history of architecture of the British Isles was published by Jonathan Cape,(8) and in 1929 his volume of reminiscences, The Dublin of Yesterday, was published by Methuen. He was a regular contributor to the Irish Builder between 1922 and 1932, and an occasional one until 1952. His Outline history and many of his articles are illustrated with his own sketches.(9) He exhibited sketches at the Water Colour Society of Ireland's exhibitions in 1906 and 1908,(10) at the  Irish International Exhibition in 1907,(11) at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1907 and 1913(12) and at the annual exhibitions of the AAI in 1908 and 1910,(13) and in 1910 he gave a talk to the AAI on 'Galicia as a sketching ground'.(14)     Dickinson was active in the AAI, of which he became president in 1911, and was also an early member of the United Arts Club.(15) He married Joan, daughter of Capt. Fitzgerald Creagh, of Cahirbane, Co. Clare, at Sandford church, Dublin, in June 1912.(16)

AAI:(17) elected member, 1897; delivers lecture on 'Galicia as a sketching ground', 8 March 1910;(18) vice-president, 1910-11; president, 1911-12; as outgoing president presented with silver salver on occasion of his marriage, October 1912;(19) resigned, 1923.
RIAI: elected member, 4 February 1907, having been proposed by  R.C. Orpen, seconded by WILLIAM MANSFIELD MITCHELL  WILLIAM MANSFIELD MITCHELL and CHARLES HERBERT ASHWORTH  CHARLES HERBERT ASHWORTH ;(20) elected fellow, 1920;(21) resigned, 1929.(22)
TPI: member, 20 December 1921; struck off, 1926.(23)

Addresses: Home: 40 Marlborough Road, Donnybrook, <=1911->=1915;(24) 33 Mespil Road, 1918-1922;(25); 30 Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate, 1924-1929.(26)
