Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Dublin. Hugh Delap, third son of ALFRED DOVER DELAP ALFRED DOVER DELAP , was born at Newbay, Rosslare, Co. Wexford, on 21 October 1906.  He was educated at Dalkey, Co. Dublin, in England and at Trinity College, Dublin, receiving the BAI degree in 1928. After working for short periods on projects in Cos. Sligo and Tyrone and abroad, he joined his father's firm of DELAP & DELAP & amp; WALLER WALLER . In 1938 he joined the engineering staff of the Office of Public Works.   Concerned mainly with harbour works, he was promoted in 1953 to the position of assistant chief engineer and in 1966 succeeded RICHARD ERNEST CROSS  RICHARD ERNEST CROSS as chief engineer.(1)   He retired from the Office of Public Works in 1971 but was retained as a consultant by Nitrigin Eireann Teo and by the Department of Defence.

Delap died at home in Cabinteely at the age of ninety on 27 January 1997.  He had married Kathleen Hilda, daughter of Charles St George Orpen, a solicitor, and niece of RICHARD FRANCIS CAULFIELD ORPEN RICHARD FRANCIS CAULFIELD ORPEN , in 1933. Hugh and Kathleen Delap, who  involved themselves actively in philanthropic and humanitarian causes, had two sons and two daughters.  Their elder son, Michael, was also an engineer.
