Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin, the eldest son of THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE  THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE and brother of LOUIS EDWARD HALL DEANE LOUIS EDWARD HALL DEANE . Thomas Manly Deane was born on 8 June 1851 at Ferney, Co. Cork, and was educated at Holyville Park School, Co. Dublin,(1) and privately before entering Trinity College, Dublin. While attending Trinity he also studied architecture as his father's pupil and on graduating in 1872 was apprenticed to WILLIAM BURGES  WILLIAM BURGES in London. Burges must have thought highly of his pupil's draughtsmanship for in 1875 he employed him to illustrate his personal copy of Tennyson's poems, albeit under close supervision.(2) Deane also studied life drawing in the studio of Frederick Weekes and at the Slade School and made a six-month architectural study tour in France, returning to Ireland at the end of 1875 to spend a year in his father's office. In 1876 he competed for and won the Royal Academy Travelling Studentship with his 'Design for Assize Courts of a large provincial town'(3) as a result of which he was able to spend nearly a year and a half in Italy in 1877-8.(4) On his return to Dublin from Italy he began practice as an architect as a partner in his father's firm. On St Patrick's Day, 1888,(5) he married Florence Mary, daughter of James Frederick Wright, a Dublin barrister, by whom he had two children.

Both during and after his father's lifetime, Deane was a frequent participant in architectural competitions for buildings ranging in size and importance from large national and municipal institutions to labourers' cottages.(6) In 1904 he was appointed co-architect with ASTON WEBB  ASTON WEBB for the new College of Science and Government Buildings to be built in Upper Merrion Street. It was said that the appointment was made to mollify public opinion in Ireland, which was hostile to the placing of the commission with an English architect.(7) Deane was knighted om 8 July1911 when the College of Science was officially opened by King George V..(8)

After his only son, Thomas Alexander David, was killed at Gallipoli on 3 May 1915,(9) Deane resigned from the RIAI(10) and undertook little further architectural work. The most important building of his later years was the War Memorial Hall and Reading Room at Trinity College. In the mid 1920s he retired to Wales.(11) Towards the end of his life his eyesight began to fail.(12) He died on 3 February 1933(13) leaving an estate of £4,647(14) and survived by his widow and his daughter, Mrs. Mary Primrose Thorp.(15) In his obituary of Deane for the RIAI journal, RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN BUTLER  RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN BUTLER writes of his friend: 'He was a brilliant draftsman, and as a designer was foremost in his day and generation in this country. Of a retiring disposition, he took no part in the affairs of the Institute, and none in public life, his interests being wholly centered in artistic matters.'

A number of Deane's sketchbooks and single sketches, some dating from his visit to Italy in 1877-1878, and his diary of a trip to France and Spain in September 1880 with sketches are in the National Gallery of Ireland.(16) In the Photographic Library of the National Library of Ireland there in an album entitled 'Own works, all designed by T. Manly Deane', which contains about one hundred photographs of buildings and furnishings designed by Deane and of architectural drawings by him.(17)

The figure must be his study, and he must read so as to become a man of letters.' (IB 17, 15 Dec 1875, ?)
