Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

English architect and town planner, for whom see Macmillan Encyclopaedia of Architects and Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. In 1916 Abercrombie and his collaborators Sydney Appleton Kelly (1881-1943) and Arthur J. Kelly, were declared winners of the international competition for replanning Dublin which had been held under the auspices of the Civics Institute of Ireland , earning a prize of £500 awarded by the Marquess of Aberdeen.(1)   A few days after the award was announced,  Abercombie gave a public lecture, 'Should Dublin be Town Planned?, in the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.(2)  He was subsequently appointed town planning consultant for Dublin. His Dublin of the Future was published in 1922 and a further town planning report and sketch development plan in 1941.(3)
