Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architectural partnership, of Dublin, formed in 1903,(1) between GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN  GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN and his former pupil, assistant and manager, THOMAS ALOYSIUS COLEMAN THOMAS ALOYSIUS COLEMAN . Ashlin died in 1921. After Coleman's death in 1950, the practice was carried on by one of his sons, HERBERT THOMAS COLEMAN  HERBERT THOMAS COLEMAN and continues, though in name only, until the present day (2001). Pupils and assistants included THOMAS JOSEPH CULLEN THOMAS JOSEPH CULLEN , JAMES JOSEPH DOLAN  JAMES JOSEPH DOLAN and ALFRED EDWIN JONES ALFRED EDWIN JONES .

In 1976 a large collection of drawings from the office was acquired by the Irish Architectural Archive (Acc. 0076/001). A further collection of drawings and photographs was acquired in 2001 (Acc. 2001/098). An interesting series of five sketchbooks kept by Coleman between 1892 and 1912 with notes and sketches of work in hand is in the possession of JONES & JONES & amp; KELLY, architects.(2)

(1) The biographies of both Ashlin and Coleman in E. Macdowel Cosgrave, ed., Dublin and County Dublin in the Twentieth Century (1908), both presumably based on information received from the architects themselves, give this date, but Alfred Gresham Jones, a pupil in the firm, gives the date as 1902 (Files C96, A46a).
(2) Photocopies in IAA, RP.B.30. The sketchbooks were exhibited as the work of Alfred Jones in The Architect and the Drawing (RIAI, 1989).

Williams, Companion guide to Architecture in Ireland 1837-1921 (1994), 344, new church was designed in 1875 by J.J. O'Callaghan 'but not completed until 1934, by which time its second architect was long since dead'.   No other evidence for O'Callaghan's authorship is forthcoming, however.)
