Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer. William Anderson was born in St Petersburg on 5 Jan 1834, the fourth son of John Anderson, a merchant and banker in that city. After studying in the Applied Sciences Department of King's College, London, and serving his pupilage at the works of Sir WILLIAM FAIRBAIRN  WILLIAM FAIRBAIRN in Manchester, Anderson began his business life in 1855 at the firm of Courtney, Stephens & Co. of the Blackhall Place Ironworks, Dublin. His work in Dublin included designing many appliances for railway signalling and several cranes. During his stay in Ireland he injured his right arm in an accident at Mssrs. Manders' Brewery.

Anderson returned to England in 1864 to join the firm of Easton and Amos of Erith. After a distinguished career in England and abroad, for which see Oxford DNB and his obituary in Min.Proc.Inst.CE 135 (1898-9), Pt. 1, 320-326, he was appointed director general of the Royal Ordnance factories at Woolwich Arsenal. He was knighted in 1897 and died on 11 December 1898.
