Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stained-glass and graphic artist, of Dublin.(1) Harry Clarke was born in North Frederick Street, Dublin, on 17 March 1889, the younger son of JOSHUA CLARKE JOSHUA CLARKE . He was educated at Belvedere College until the death of his mother in 1914, when he joined his father in the family ecclesiastical decoration business. According to Harry Allberry's obituary of THOMAS FRANCIS MCNAMARA  THOMAS FRANCIS MCNAMARA in the Irish Builder, Clarke became McNamara's pupil but was advised by him to give up architecture for art.(2) Clarke studied stained glass in at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin under ALFRED ERNEST CHILD  ALFRED ERNEST CHILD from 1910-1913, and travelled in France in 1914. On the death of his father in 1921 he and his elder brother Walter took over the management of the family business. The demands of running the business and his own intense creative productivity appear to have taken their toll on Clarke's health. In 1925 he suffered a severe eye-infection and headaches, then in January 1926 he was nearly killed in a bicycling accident. In the later 1920s the business was divided, with Walter Clarke taking over the decorative side and Harry the stained-glass side.(3) In July 1930, Walter Clarke died at the age of forty-three.(4) Harry had meanwhile contracted tuberculosis, and on 2 January 1931 he died at Coire in Switzerland on his way home from Davos. He was survived by his wife, the painter Margaret Crilley, whom he had married in 1914, and three children: Ann, Michael, and David.(5)   The business continued as Harry Clarke Studios.

A large collection of Clarke material, comprising some six hundred items, is in the National Library of Ireland.

Address: 33 North Frederick Street, 1889 - until death.
