- Born: 1749 Died: 1832
English engineer, for biography of whom see A.W. Skempton, 'William Chapman, (1749-1832), civil engineer', Transactions of the Newcomen Society 46 (1973), 45-72,(1) and Oxford DNB. During the latter part of the eighteenth century, William Chapman was associated with many Irish inland navigation schemes including the Shannon Navigation, the Naas Canal, the Barrow Navigation and the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal.. As assistant to WILLIAM JESSOP , consultant engineer to the Grand Canal Company, he devised the plan for linking the Grand Canal with the mouth of the Liffey, which he propounded in a pamphlet, Observations on the Advantages of bringing the Grand Canal round by the Circular Road into the River Liffey (1785). He was a brother of EDWARD CHAPMAN. (2)
