Nature: New bridge 5-arch replacing mediaeval 14-arch one carried away by storms in 1833. JP and G.R. Pain architects and contractors. Original survey made by JP in 1814 and proposal for replacement presented to Corporation, 1816 but not built until 1836-40. William H. Owen resident engineer.
