Dictionary of Irish Architects – Architectural Craftsmen

The Dictionary of Irish Architects is primarily a biographical index of architects, builders and craftsmen focused on Ireland and Irish buildings. It is a project of the Irish Architectural Archive.

Most of theDictionary of Irish Architects is dedicated to architects. However, the dictionary also includes engineers who designed architectural structures, some builders, artists and craftsmen, and some amateurs and writers on architecture and architectural subjects.

Clearly, the activity of architectural designing and building involves more than architects and builders. Engineers, surveyors, planners and even town clerks are important. Craftsmen realise the architectural vision, be it bricklayers, cabinetmakers, carpenters, decorators, gilders, glaziers, iron founders and masters, joiners, masons, plasterers, plumbers, slaters, or stone cutters. The work of lettering artists, mosaic artists, sculptors, and stained glass artists graces the buildings and structures. Landscape architects and gardeners help shape the surrounding landscape. Therefore, the Dictionary of Irish Architects contains biographies of administrators, craftsmen and tradesmen where available and appropriate in its index.
