Architect, of Dublin. James Rawson Carroll, a younger son of Thomas Carroll, writing and English master, of Leinster Street and Waterloo Rd, Dublin, and brother of THOMAS HENRY CARROLL THOMAS HENRY CARROLL , HOWARD CARROLL  HOWARD CARROLL and CHARLES OWENS CARROLL CHARLES OWENS CARROLL (1) was born in 1830. He was educated at Delamere's school, near Delgany, Co. Wicklow and is probably the James R. Carroll who was admitted to the Royal Dublin Society's School of School of Drawing in architecture on 26 February 1846.(2) He was subsequently articled to GEORGE FOWLER JONES  GEORGE FOWLER JONES of York with whom he remained for seven years.(3) Jones was the architect of Cloghanadfoy Castle, Co. Limerick, built circa 1850, for which Thomas Carroll was the contractor for stonework.(4) James Rawson Carroll also worked in the office of JOHN RAPHAEL BRANDON. JOHN RAPHAEL BRANDON. (5) He had returned to Dublin by 1857 to set up his own practice at 180 Great Brunswick Street, an address he shared with his brother Charles. In 1861 he exhibited architectural designs and models at the Royal Dublin Society's Exhibition of the Fine Arts.(6)

At a time when the value of land was increasing as the country recovered from the famine years, Carroll was able to build up a considerable country house practice as well as designing several churches and other public buildings. In 1875 he acted as assessor in selecting the design for the Church of Ireland Glebe House at Rathmines, Dublin, giving his decision in favour of THOMAS DREW. THOMAS DREW. (7)   Carroll, with Drew, represented Ireland at the General Conference of Architects at the RIBA in London in June 1876 and again - this time with JOHN LANYON -  JOHN LANYON - in June 1878,(8), when he spoke on the subjects of the rusting of ironwork and the new model by-law.(9)

In 1882 Carroll took his nephew and pupil JOHN HOWARD PENTLAND  JOHN HOWARD PENTLAND into partnership. Pentland left the practice to work for the Office of Public Works in December 1884,(10) and some years later, circa 1892, Carroll formed a new partnership with his chief assistant, FREDERICK BATCHELOR FREDERICK BATCHELOR , which lasted until his retirement in 1905.(11) During these latter years, as the result of the land agitation and altered social conditions in the country, the commissions received by the firm tended to be of a public nature, in which Carroll was less interested than he had been in work of a more personal character. According to his obituary in the Irish Builder, Carroll was a 'kindly, upright, courteous gentleman', whose 'clients were in a real sense his friends, no trouble was too great for him to take; indeed, his attention to detail was extraordinary, and therein lay the secret of much of his success.' He was an active member of the Architects' Club in Dublin. He was also a Freemason.(12) He died on 30 Nov 1911 at the age of eighty-one. He was unmarried and is recorded in the 1901 census as living at 56 Mount Street with two spinster sisters.
