CALDBECK, WILLIAM FRANCIS
- Born: 1824ca Died: 1872
Architect and civil engineer of Dublin. William Francis Caldbeck, a son of Richard Caldbeck and grandson of John Frederick Caldbeck, was born circa 1824(1) WILLIAM CALDBECK of Clondalkin and Larch Hill, Whitechurch, Co. Dublin, barrister, gunpowder-miller and amateur architect, was his great-grandfather.(2) William Francis served his pupilage under WILLIAM DEANE BUTLER ,(3) and set up in practice on 21 February 1844. His personal account book for the years 1844-1860 records a professional income which rose from £41-13s in 1844 to £1,300-10s-4d in 1859.(4) He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1844, 1847, 1849, 1850, 1861 and 1864.(5) He is named as an architect in Thom's directories from 1844 until 1864; in 1865 and 1866 he is not listed but reappears in 1867 with the additional designation of 'consul for Uruguay and Montevideo', and is so described until his death in 1872.(6) He was also architect to the National Bank.(7) The architect JOHN RYAN [2] is said to to have been associated with Caldbeck 'for many years…in the design and carrying out of many important works'.(8) Caldbeck's pupils and assistants included JOHN MICHAEL BARRY.
Caldbeck died suddenly at 24 Harcourt St, Dublin, on 30 March 1872(9) and was buried at Glasnevin Cemetery, leaving his widow and family 'perfectly independent'.(10) The Dora Caldbeck who witnessed the indenture of apprenticeship of John Michael Barry to William Caldbeck on 16 March 1850(11) was either William Caldbeck's aunt or his cousin.
The Irish Architectural Archive holds Caldbeck's personal account book, mentioned above, which he started on 1 January 1844, when he was on the point of setting up in practice (Acc. 95/150).

(1) According to his gravestone in Glasnevin Cemetery, Caldbeck was 48 when he died; Craig, op. cit., questions this.
(2) According to Craig, op. cit., because Richard Caldbeck married a Catholic, his children were edited out of Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, and the Moyle Park estate was left to a remote cousin. However, as Caldbeck received support and patronage from his uncle, William Caldbeck of Moyle Park, who appears to have been sympathetic to Catholicism, there appears to be no reason to suppose that the property passed to the cousin on this account.
