Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. Samuel Patrick Close was born in 1842 in Kilmaine, Co. Mayo, the son of Robert Shaw Close, rector of Kilmaine, and his wife, Sarah, the daughter of a Dublin merchant named Mills. He went to a private school in Dublin and was intended by his parents for the army, but the loss of an eye in an accident when he was about eighteen ruled out a military career and allowed him instead to pursue the profession of architect. In 1862, at the age of twenty, he became articled to the Belfast-based architectural firm of LANYON LYNN & LANYON LYNN & amp; LANYON LANYON . By 1868 he had moved to Carrickfergus as clerk of works for the building of Sheils's Charitable Institution, designed by WILLIAM HENRY LYNN WILLIAM HENRY LYNN . On the completion of the building he left Lanyon, Lynn & Lanyon, though maintaining some connection with the firm, and became superintendent of works for ALEXANDER TATE ALEXANDER TATE , county surveyor of Antrim. In this capacity he supervised the building of the new town hall at Larne (1868-1870). In 1872 he opened his own office at 53 Waring Street, Belfast, and for the next forty years or so ran a practice which was very largely limited to work in counties Antrim and Down. In 1899 he moved to new premises in Donegall Square, which were shared with W.H. Lynn.

Close was an excellent draughtsman and by September 1864, when his first illustration appeared in the Dublin Builder, had been chosen by Lanyon, Lynn & Lanyon, to execute pictorial representations of their work. He was a frequent exhibitor of his drawings, both architectural designs and topographical sketches. Drawings by him were included in twenty-one RHA exhibitions between 1874 and 1908; he also exhibited at the RIAI in 1865, 1869 and 1873,(1) at the Belfast Industrial Exhibition in 1876,(2) at the Cork Industrial Exhibition in1883,(3) and at the Irish International Exhibition in 1907.(4) In 1868, on the recommendation of the council of the RIAI, he published the series of measured drawings of Holy Cross Abbey, Co. Tipperary, for which the RIAI had awarded him the Fitzgerald Silver Medal, with an accompanying descriptive letterpress;(5) three of the drawings were reproduced in the Irish Builder of 15 Aug 1888 (facing p. 208).

Close's figure is described by F.J. Bigger as 'rugged' and 'towering', though by temperament he was apparently mild and retiring. In about 1877 he married Lucinda Frances (d. 1920), daughter of William Burleigh, J.P., of Carrickfergus. Their son, RICHARD MILLS CLOSE RICHARD MILLS CLOSE , entered his father's firm in 1908, became a partner in 1910 and from about 1915 onwards was effectively in charge. After his retirement Samuel Close continued to live at Carrickfergus, which had been his home for most of his working life and where he had designed a house for himself in 1894. He died at Carrickfergus on 2 August 1925.

Close was a subscriber to George Lister Sutcliffe, The Principles and Practice of Modern House-Construction (London, 1898).
