Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. According to the 1911 census, James Byrne was born in Belfast in 1861 or 1862, the elder brother by two years of EDWARD J. BYRNE EDWARD J. BYRNE .   In 1884 he was acting as his brother's clerk of works for the erection of Leonard's bar in the Antrim Road, Belfast, and a block of shops in Royal Avenue.(1)   In or before1897 Edward Byrne took him into partnership, naming the practice E. & J. BYRNE.& BYRNE.& #160; The 1911 census records the two bachelor brothers living with their sister Ellen at 19 Alexandra Avenue, Duncairn.  James Byrne survived his brother and is mentioned in the notice of the latter's death in the Irish Builder in November 1930.(2)
