BYRNE, FRANCIS BARRY #
- Born: 1883 Died: 1967
Architect, of Chicago, for whom see Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects(1982), I, 361-2.(1) In Ireland Byrne designed the innovative Church of Christ the King, Turner's Cross, Cork (1927-1931), which was carried out under the supervision of BASIL BOYD BARRETT . In her unpublished Ph.D. thesis on Byrne, Sally Chappell points out that he had expressed in various articles his objections to traditional, revivalist designs for churches on the grounds of cost, and suggests that it may have been his 'reputation for economy' as much as anything else which recommended him to the Bishop of Cork, Dr Daniel Cohalan.(2)
See WORKS, for Irish work only.
(1) The encyclopaedia entry, by Sally Chappell, gives the date of Byrne's death as 1968, but his death is reported in IB 109, 30 Dec 1967, ?, as having occurred when he was hit by a car on 17 Dec 1967.
(2) Sally Chappell, 'Barry Byrne: Architecture and Writings', unpublished Ph.D. dissertation, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, 1968, 95. An account of the commission is given in Sean Rothery, Ireland and the New Architecture 1900-1940 (1991), 155-168.
