BUTLER, RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN
- Born: 1872 Died: 1943
Architect and engineer, of Dublin. Rudolf Maximilian Butler was born in Dublin on 30 September 1872, the son of John Butler, a barrister from Carlow, and Augusta Brassart, who came from Schleswig-Holstein.(1) He was educated in Dublin until he was ten, when his father died. At the time of his father's death in Dublin, Rudolf was on a Christmas holiday with his mother in Germany, with the result that he remained in Germany to finish his education. When he was sixteen he returned to Dublin, where, after a brief spell in the wine business, he became a pupil first, from 1889-1891, of JAMES JOSEPH FARRALL and then, from 1891 to 1896, of WALTER GLYNN DOOLIN. H e stayed on as an assistant to Doolin from 1896 to 1899, when he became his junior partner. Following Doolin's death in March 1902, Butler carried on the practice in partnership with JAMES LOUIS DONNELLY as DOOLIN BUTLER & amp; DONNELLY. (2) Since 1899 Butler had also been architect and engineer to Rathdown Rural District Council, in which capacity he designed some five hundred cottages in Cos. Dublin & Wicklow.(3) In 1902 he was also appointed consulting engineer to the Gurteen drainage board.
From the time he completed his apprenticeship, Butler was an active member of the Dublin architectural scene: in 1896, with WILLIAM RICHARD GLEAVE , ALFRED IGNATIUS MCGLOUGHLIN and HARRY ALLBERRY he revived the moribund AAI. In the same year he and others joined the RIAI to push for the transfer of more power from the council to the members. He also published a measured drawing of the Reliquary at Holy Cross Abbey, Co. Tipperary, and a design for a suburban church in the Irish Builder.(4) He was one of the Irish contingent who joined the London Architectural Association's expedition to Bury St Edmunds in August 1900.(5) In 1907 he and PATRICK JOSEPH LYNCH were appointed assessors for the Limerick Technical Insitute competition.(6) The following year he was involved in the establishment of the Georgian Society, serving as a committee member. He was a friend of the English architect ALBERT EDWARD RICHARDSON and advised him on which Irish buildings should be included in his Monumental Classic Architecture in Great Britain and Ireland during the 18th and 19th centuries (1914).
Butler's first major architectural success came in 1912, when he won first prize in the competition for designing University College, Dublin. He was appointed examiner in architecture of the National University of Ireland in 1923(7) and professor of architecture at UCD in 1924.(8) In 1924 he won the silver medal in the architectural design class at the exhibition of Irish Art, Ballsbridge,(9) and in 1926 received the Mullins Silver Medal of the ICEI for his paper on 'Architectural Engineering', delivered to the Institution on 1 March 1926.(10) In June 1931, on the occasion of the RIBA conference in Dublin, he received the Honorary Degree of Master of Architecture from the NUI.(11)
In 1899 Butler became the editor and, for a for a few months, co-proprietor, of the Irish Builder. The magazine was sold on in 1900 to J.T. Rae and in 1901 to the Irish Wheelman,(15) but Butler remained editor until 1935, when HARRY ALLBERRY took over from him.(13)
At the end of 1942 Butler announced his intended retirement from the chair of architecture at UCD for reasons of health.(14) He died on 3 February 1943 having married in 1911 Annie Gibbons from County Mayo,(15) by whom he had a son and three daughters. His son JOHN GEOFFREY BUTLER and his daughter ELEANOR GRACE BUTLER carried on the practice after his death.(16) His pupils and assistants included HARRY ROBSON and FREDERICK SUTCLIFFE.
Butler, although he was a Moravian by upbringing, was largely engaged in Catholic ecclesiastical work, initially through his association with Doolin. When he was twenty-three, according to his daughter, Eleanor, later Lady Wicklow, a chance encounter with an Irish Passionist, Father McMullen, in a train in France resulted in the commission to design part(?) of the Passionist chapel in the Avenue Hoche, Paris, and probably led to the commissions he executed for the Passionists in Ireland, including the church and monastery at Ardoyne, Belfast, of 1900-1902 and the new college for the mother house in Enniskillen, designed in 1917. Lady Wicklow suggests that the connection with the Passionists opened up the North West of Ireland to the practice and accounts for the association with James Donnelly, who came from Enniskillen. In the 1911 census he gives his religion as 'Catholic Church' as opposed to the normal 'Roman Catholic'.
In 1985 the IAA was given on permanent loan a collection of drawings, photographs and other documents relating to Butler's work which had passed to his son, John Geoffrey Butler (Accession no 85/107). These include drawings and perspective views of buildings by Butler, many probably prepared for exhibition at the RHA, and a series of twenty-eight notebooks kept by Doolin and Butler over the period 1867-1933. Further accessions of Butler material are 85/130, 85/135, 87/053, 88/118, 94/146, 95/138, 97/018.
