Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

City engineer and borough surveyor of Dublin. Michael Buckley brother of Donal O Buchalla, the last Governor General of Ireland, was born in Maynooth in about 1870.(1) He studied engineering at the College of Science, receiving the diploma in 1892. After two years spent making surveys of estates for the purposes of the Land Commission and a brief spell working for the Commissioners of Irish Lights, he entered the service of Dublin Corporation in 1894(2) as an assistant to the borough surveyor and waterworks engineer, SPENCER HARTY SPENCER HARTY . He was appointed township engineer and surveyor to Drumcondra in 1897. When Drumcondra was incorporated into the extended Dublin area in 1900, he became engineer to the City Council Improvement Committee and in 1906 was put in charge of the city main drainage scheme. He was appointed borough surveyor and engineer to the waterworks in April 1913 on the death of JOHN GABRIEL O'SULLIVAN. JOHN GABRIEL O'SULLIVAN. (3) He held the post of city engineer and borough surveyor (as it was subsequently named) until 1925, when he retired with an allowance of £805 15s. 10d. per annum, to be succeeded by MICHAEL A. MOYNIHAN MICHAEL A. MOYNIHAN . He was a member of the National Housing Board from 1932 to 1934. He died in May 1951.
