BUCKLEY, MICHAEL JOSEPH CUNNINGHAM *
- Born: 1847/48 Died: 1905
Antiquarian and designer of church furnishings, of London, Youghal, Co. Cork, and Bruges, Belgium, active from the 1860s until 1905. Michael Buckley was a son of John George Buckley, of Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, who when emigrating to Newfoundland as a young man was captured by a French privateer and taken as a prisoner to France, where he remained for some time after his release. Michael Buckley was born in Cahir, Co. Tipperary, in 1847 or 1848 and educated at Mount Melleray Abbey School and Louvain. In 1881(1) he became a partner in the firm of COX & BUCKLEY , ecclesiastical art manufacturers of London. He appears in the English census of 1891 as a single, forty-three-year-old lodger, living at 17 Buckingham Street, London, his occupation described as 'in manufacture'. When the firm of Cox & Buckley failed, involving him in severe financial loss, he moved to Ireland, where he established a stained glass and metal works, at Youghal. He also acted as agent and designer for the Decorative Arts Guild of Bruges and was about to bring over some Belgian art workers to Youghal at the time of his death, which took place after a short illness on 2 August 1905 at his house, Montmorenci, Youghal. He was buried in the North Abbey churchyard, Youghal. He was still unmarried at the time of his death. At some point, probably in 1903 or 1904, the firm was taken over by JAMES WATSON & amp; CO.(2)
Buckley was an enthusiastic and informed antiquarian with a particular interest in ecclesiastical art and architecture; 'though brought up in a severely antiquarian school, no man appreciated more warmly than he the breaking away from hide-bound tradition, exemplified in the work of the best men, such as Bodley, Leonard, Stokes and others in their later work'.(3) He was a contributor to the Ecclesiastical Art Review, the JRSAI, the Journal of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society and the Waterford Archaeological Journal. He became a member of the RSAI in 1888 and acted as hon. local secretary for East Cork.
Addresses: 8 Gillet's Hill, Youghal, 1901; Montmorenci, Yourghal, at time of death.
