Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer and architect, of Co. Cork. Denis Buckley, the son of John Buckley, a Cork botanist, was born in Cork on 11 February 1872. He served an an apprenticeship with KEARNS DEANE ROCHE  KEARNS DEANE ROCHE and studied at Queen's College and the Municipal School of Science and Art, Cork, the Manchester Technical Schools and the Royal College of Science and Art, South Kensington, where, in 1892, he was awarded an Art Master's Certificate and a £50 scholarship. He was subsequently assistant to WILLIAM HAGUE  WILLIAM HAGUE and John Ely of Manchester. By 1905 he had become engineer to Mallow Urban District Council;  he was  also architect and engineer to Fermoy Urban District Council from 1909 or earlier(1) and to Millstreet Rural District Council. He still held the Mallow and Fermoy posts in 1934.(2)

Buckley married on 10 January 1903, Beatrice, daughter of Edward Vaughan, of Hunting Hall, Castletownroche, by whom he had three daughters and two sons, the younger of whom, Dermot Edward Buckley, practised as an engineer in England.(3)

RIAI: elected member 25 May 1905, proposed by THOMAS ROBERTS THOMAS ROBERTS , seconded by LAURENCE ALOYSIUS MCDONNELL  LAURENCE ALOYSIUS MCDONNELL and ARTHUR HILL ARTHUR HILL ;(4) reinstated member 1919;(5) still on membership list for 1950, but not on that for 1951.(6)
