Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and civil engineer, of Derry. According to his 1911 census return, Robert Eccles Buchanan was born in Co. Tyrone in 1864 or 1865.   The first time his name appears in the Irish Builder is in October 1887 as the architect, with HUME BABINGTON HUME BABINGTON , of alterations to St. Columb's CI church, Rathmullen, Co. Donegal.(1) He is listed in the Derry Almanac as an architect practising at Pump Street, Derry, 1888-1892, at 35 Shipquay Street 1894-5, and at 33 Shipquay Street, 1896-1899. From 1900 his address is given in the Irish Builder as Castle Street. From February 1907 the practice is frequently, but not always, named in the Irish Builder as R.E. Buchanan & Co. In or before 1923 Buchanan established a partnership with JAMES REID JAMES REID , which practised as BUCHANAN & BUCHANAN & amp; REID from 6 Shipquay Street until 1934 or later. His pupils and assistants included JAMES VALENTINE JOHNSTON.& JAMES VALENTINE JOHNSTON.& #160; At the time of the 1911 census, he had been married to his English-born wife, Ethel Maud, for twenty years and had three children.
