Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

German sculptor, painter and stained-glass artist, for whom see Dr Karl Busch, August Weckbecker (Munich, 1963).  In 1925 Weckbecker was invited to Co. Carlow by the Rev. Michael Bolger to erect a monument over the grave of the Rev. Hugh Cullen (d. 1917) in Killeshin churchyard.(1)  He remained in Co. Carlow for some time, during which he also designed the East window, stations of the cross, a relief of the Entombment , a tabernacle, and two murals for the church at Carlow lunatic asylum (now St Dympna's Hospital).   Busch's catalogue of Weckbecker's works also lists 'St.Augustin/Irland: St Patrick's Denkmal' (cat. no. 109) but does not say where this is (or was).

A bust of Roger Casement by Weckbecker, exhibited at the Glaspalast, Munich, in 1918, was donated to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1963.(Busch, cat. no. 4)..
