Architect and later actor, of London, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (4th edn., 2008), 683. After finishing his articles with AUGUSTUS WELBY NORTHMORE PUGIN  AUGUSTUS WELBY NORTHMORE PUGIN in 1823, Mathews was invited to Ireland by Charles John Gardiner, 1st Earl of Blessington, to design a house at Mountjoy Forest, Co. Tyrone.  Nothing came of the project, however.
