Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Cork and Dublin. Dermot O'Toole was born in Maynooth, Co. Kildare, on 22 November 1910 and educated at the National Schools in Maynooth and the Christian Brothers' school in Kilcock, Co. Kildare. He became an articled pupil of DOMINIC MARY O'CONNOR  DOMINIC MARY O'CONNOR in Cork in 1926. During the period of his apprenticeship he attended classes in the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin, (October 1927 to July 1928) and the Crawford Technical Institute and Crawford School of Art in Cork. In 1933 he moved to Dublin, where he worked in the offices of ALFRED AUGUSTINE MURPHY ALFRED AUGUSTINE MURPHY , SCOTT & GOOD SCOTT & GOOD , RUDOLPH MAXIMILIAN BUTLER  RUDOLPH MAXIMILIAN BUTLER and RALPH HENRY BYRNE RALPH HENRY BYRNE . In 1937 he joined the staff of the Office of Public Works as one of the team of architects engaged in the design of Dublin Airport. After a further period in public service as an Inspector in the Department of Local Government, in 1944 or 1945 he set up in independent practice with THOMAS PAUL KENNEDY  THOMAS PAUL KENNEDY at 69 Fitzwilliam Square. From about 1957 he practised on his own, first from No. 2 Hatch Street and finally, from about 1964, from his home in Dalkey. His work was mainly domestic and commercial. He also acted as a town planning and landscape consultant to many public authorities, pioneering Bord Failte's Tidy Towns campaign. He died on 22 December 1970, leaving a widow and family.
