Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer, of Ballymena, Co. Antrim, and Dunedin, New Zealand. Andrew Boyd was born on 27 December 1856. In November 1880 he was admitted to the Department of Engineering of Queen's University, Belfast, where he studied under Professor GEORGE FULLER  GEORGE FULLER until December 1881. From November 1883 until May 1884 he worked on the construction of the city tramway in Auckland, New Zealand. Having returned to Belfast, he eventually completed the engineering course at Queen's under Professor MAURICE FITZGERALD  MAURICE FITZGERALD in the years 1892-1894. He was awarded the BE degree in October 1894. In the same month he was appointed assistant to PETER CHALMERS COWAN PETER CHALMERS COWAN , county surveyor for Co. Down. In February 1896 he also established a private practice at Ballymena.  In January 1907 his office was gutted by an accidental fire,(1) which was possibly a factor in his decision to emigrate to Australia. He had a temporary address in Queensland by the beginning of 1911(2) and settled in Dunedin, New Zealand, later the same year.

Inst.CE: elected associate member, 14 April 1896; resigned 10 February 1925.
