Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast, active from 1813 or earlier until 1853 or later. James Boyd placed an advertisement in the Belfast News Letter on 26 March 1813,(1) at around the same time that he took over from JOHN MCCUTCHEON  JOHN MCCUTCHEON as superintending architect of JOHN SOANE' JOHN SOANE' s Belfast Academical Institution, which was finished in 1814.(2) In the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland there are about twenty-five documents dating between 1816 and 1851 relating to Boyd ; these include the information that he built the Belfast Asylum.(3) In 1828 he is recorded as examining the Belfast Sessions Court House.(4) 'Boyed, -, Architect, 45 York Street, Belfast' is listed as a subscriber to the Architectural Publication Society's Dictionary of Architecture in 1852 or 1853.(5)

Designed with stepped gables, high-pitched roofs and ornamental chimneys to harmonize. with cathedral. Built of local limestone with 130 ft. STREET frontage. To cost about £3000.  Contractor: McCullough & Ross, Armagh.
