Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Cos. Clare, 1836-1845, and Wicklow, 1845-1853. James Boyd, who was born circa 1781, was working as a civil engineer in Belfast when he was appointed county surveyor for Co. Clare on 15 September 1836. In the summer of that year was placed in charge of the erection of all the court houses and bridewells in the county.(1) From 1837 or earlier he also held the position of city surveyor for Limerick.(2) On 13 September 1845 he was appointed county surveyor for Co. Wicklow. He held this post until his death at the age of seventy-two 'of disease of the heart', which took place at his home, East Hall, Delgany, on 9 July 1853.(3) HENRY BRETT  HENRY BRETT was appointed his successor later the same month. In both Cos. Clare and Wicklow Boyd was assisted by his son Campbell Boyd.(4)
