Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Carpenter, of Merrion Street, Dublin, active in the 1760s and 1770s. John Wilson, who is variously described as a
bricklayer and as a builder, was one of the principal promoters of the development of Merrion Square and by the beginning of 1765 had built twelve houses on the first ten lots of ground.  His houses on the square included Nos. 1- 4 (1762-1765), No. 9 (1763) and No. 26 (1766).(1) He was one of the nominees for election as a sheriff of the city in 1772; in order to qualify one had to be a resident freeman of the city or its liberties and to be worth at least £2,000. He was nominated again in 1773 and 1774 and eventually elected in August 1774.(2) He may be the same person as JOHN WILSON [2]. JOHN WILSON [2].

'Mr. John Wilson, Bricklayer' was one of the subscribers to JOHN AHERON' JOHN AHERON' s A general treatise on architecture (1754) and 'Mr. John Wilson' to the First Volume of the Instructions given in the Drawing School established by the Dublin-Society (Dublin, 1769).
