Engineer, of Dublin. Edward Bourke received the BSc and BE degrees from University College, Dublin, in 1927.(1) He then worked on the Shannon scheme at Ardnacrusha with Siemens Bau-Union, after which he gained further engineering experience in Great Britain and Brazil. He returned to Ireland in 1933(2) and joined the engineering department of Dublin Corporation, where he was initially employed on the Crumlin housing scheme. He was appointed chief engineering assistant in the waterworks department in 1937, deputy city engineer in 1941 and city engineer, in the place of NORMAN ALBERT CHANCE NORMAN ALBERT CHANCE , in 1950. He retired in 1971. His most important achievements during his years with the Corporation were the development of two waterworks in connection with the ESB's hydro-electric schemes at Poulaphouca and Leixlip and the North Dublin and Greater Dublin drainage schemes. He also introduced one-way streets and other traffic management schemes to cope with the considerable increase in traffic during his years as city engineer.

Bourke died in 1996 in his 90th year. His wife, Molly, died a few weeks after him. He had met her during his early days with the Corporation, when her family's lands were compulsorily purchased for the Crumlin public housing scheme. 'J.F.', the writer of the appreciation of Bourke which appeared in the Irish Times describes him as a 'tall, lean, rather austere, chainsmoking' man with a 'formidable and commanding personality, who was nevertheless a 'warm-hearted colleague'.
