Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Surveyor, builder and architect, of Limavady, Co. Derry, active in the 1820s and 1830s. Details of James Turnbull's employment as a clerk of works and factotum on the estates of four London companies - the Fishmongers', Grocers, Clothworkers' and Mercers' - in Co. Derry are given by Curl.(1) According to Curl, Turnbull was closely associated with the Rev. George Vaughan Sampson, who was appointed the first agent of the Fishmongers' Company estates in Co. Derry in 1820. After 1830 Sampson started to rely on local men to design buildings on the estates - rather than the Company's surveyor RICHARD SUTER -  RICHARD SUTER - and entrusted Turnbull with a number of designs. Turnbull consequently began to style himself 'Architect' at about this time. Slater's directory for 1846 notes of Kilrea, Co. Derry, that the modern buildings in the town and its neighbourhood 'have nearly all been erected by Mr James Turnbull, a talented architect of Newtown-Limavady'.(2)
