Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and engineer of Dundalk, Co. Louth, and Dublin. According to his 1911 census return, Charles Tuite was born in England in 1866 or 1867. Although he was later to state that he was born in Drogheda, it appears that his family settled there at some stage after his birth. Two younger sisters were born in Drogheda, and he also served his pupilage there.  He started to practise in Drogheda in the early 1890s(1) and then moved to Dundalk, where he had an office until at least 1913, working largely for local authorities in nearby counties. He was appointed engineer and architect to the Cavan Rural District Council's labourers' cottage scheme in 1900,(2) elected town surveyor of Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, in 1907(3) and architect to the Monaghan housing sceme in 1910.(4) His career was possibly interrupted by the First World War. Nothing is heard of him in the Irish Builder between March 1913 and November 1924, when he announced that, having 'for some time past been in the Government service', he had returned to private practice and had opened an office at 2 Hume Street, Dublin; this property is described in the directories of the period as being 'Let in Flats', which suggests that he resumed practice in a very small way. According to the same announcement his design for a cottage near Malahide, Co. Dublin, 'was the first house to obtain the grant under the Free State (1924) Housing Act'.

Addresses: Work: Drogheda, 1891;(5) 39 Castletown Road, Dundalk, <=1900(6)->=1913(7) 2 Hume Street, Dublin, 1924.
