Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer. Frank Johnson Travers was born on 17 March 1860, the fourth son of William Johnson, DL, of Vosterberg, Co. Cork, by his wife Anne, eldest daughter of John Smithwick, of Rathclogheen, Co. Tipperary.(1) He had assumed the additional name of Travers by 1899;(2) the reason for this is not clear, as it was some time before his marriage to Eleanor Annette Mary, daughter of Colonel Henry Fane Travers, of Courtmacsherry, Co. Cork, in 1913.(3) After obtaining the BE degree of the Royal University, he spent eight years on various harbour, railway and iron bridge works and a twelve-month 'improver' with George Deacon of Liverpool. He had been appointed engineer to Clonakilty Board of Guardians by 1899(4) and to Clonakilty urban and rural district councils by 1901. He also practised privately. At the time of the 1911 census he was a justice of the peace for the county.  He died on 6 December 1940.(5) He had no children.

ICEI: elected associate member, 1 May 1901;(6) no longer on list of members for 1911.

Address: Butlerstown House, Timoleague, Co.Cork, <=1902->=1906.(7)
