Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and civil engineer, of Belfast. William Taggart was born in 1872. According to his obituary in the Irish Builder he served his apprenticeship with the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway and 'was a link with the time of the late John Lanyon, whom he knew well'. JOHN LANYON JOHN LANYON , as architect to the company, may have been responsible for the architectural side of Taggart's formation.

Taggart set up in independent practice circa 1898; his first work to be recorded in the Irish Builder is the Megain Memorial Hall in Chamberlain Street, Belfast, of 1902. He designed a large quantity of domestic buildings in the suburbs of Belfast and was also responsible for some church work, notably two new churches for the Church of Ireland in Belfast, St Bartholomew's, Stranmillis Road (1928-30) and St Finnian's, Cregagh Park (1930-32). As architect to the Antrim Regional Education Committee, he also designed a number of schools. He was engineer to Antrim Rural District Council and to Belfast Rural District Council(1) and town surveyor for Donaghadee Urban District Council in succession to JOHN MOORE[1]. JOHN MOORE[1]. (2)

From circa 1920-1925 Taggart had a partner named Silk - probably W.H. SILK - practising as TAGGART & SILK. I TAGGART & SILK. I n 1931 he took his son REDMOND THIBEAUDEAU TAGGART  REDMOND THIBEAUDEAU TAGGART into partnership. He died at home in Belfast on 1 October 1940. His obituary in the Irish Builder records the 'modesty, dignity and kindly good humour'of a 'loveable' man. After his death his son carried on the firm, retaining the name of W.D.R. & R.T. Taggart until the 1980s.(3)
