Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Sandham Symes, the third son of Sandham Symes, attorney, and his first wife, Barbara Warren, was born in 1807. After training as an architect under WILLIAM FARRELL WILLIAM FARRELL , he set up in practice in his father's house in Dominick Street. He lived and worked in the same house for the rest of his life. He never married, but his sister Barbara's sons RICHARD SANDHAM SWAN  RICHARD SANDHAM SWAN and Joseph Percival Swan appear to have lived with him for many years.

In 1842 Symes applied unsuccessfully to succeed JOHN THOMAS PAPWORTH  JOHN THOMAS PAPWORTH as architect to the Royal Dublin Society.(1) According to his obituary in the Irish Builder, he 'carried out works in many of our public institutions, such as St Patrick's, Steevens', and the Rotunda Hospital, &c., and for the Board of Erasmus Smith's Schools'. In 1854 he was appointed architect to the Bank of Ireland. In this capacity he designed branch banks all over Ireland. The Bank of Ireland holds a large collection of his designs and an album of his survey drawings of bank premises throughout the country.(2) He retired from the post in 1879, when he was succeeded by the partnership of RICHARD CHAYTOR MILLAR  RICHARD CHAYTOR MILLAR and WILLIAM JOHN SYMES WILLIAM JOHN SYMES , the latter being the son of a cousin.(3) He became an associate of the RIAI in 1844 (see below) and was the oldest surviving member at the time of his death.

Symes died 'within a few days of entering his eighty-eighth year' on 27 June 1894 and was buried in Mount Jerome cemetery. His obituary in the Irish Builder notes that he was 'particularly remarked for his neat and quiet taste, also for his great accuracy, and his unswerving integrity and uprightness'. It also comments on his 'great energy'. Although he was lame from boyhood, he travelled widely - in Britain, Europe, the Middle East and North America - and once made an ascent in a balloon from the Rotunda Gardens.(4) An album of drawings by him which was sold in 1981(5) contains sketches made on a tour to Devonshire, the Isle of Wight, York and Liverpool in 1836, while one of his two visits in North America - made in 1841 - resulted in a model of the Niagara Falls which he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1843.(6) Sketches of the Waterloo battlefield and 'My window at Cologne' in the possession of William Harvey of Glasgow(7) record a visit to Germany and Belgium in the late summer of 1843. A sea cruise to Egypt and the Holy Land in August and September 1860 was recorded in a sketchbook(7) and was followed five years later by a lecture to the RIAI on the Pyramids (see below and BIBLIOGRAPHY BIBLIOGRAPHY ).

The Irish Architectural Archive holds an undated perspective view by Symes of his design for Ladywell, Co. Westmeath (Acc. 82/18).
